Two Feb 9, 1936 Letters: Ina and the Spitlers

Ina’s letter, Feb 9, 1936

                                                                          Sunday, Feb 9, 1936

Dear King –

I was sure happy to get your letter and noted from the postmark from the day you wrote it – that it took just one month to reach me.  I am writing you back as it will be the middle of March when you get it.  I thought I was going to get to go back to the Pan [American Cafe] to work as Thelma quit and Henry {King's business partner] said I could have her place but I didn’t get it.  He hired a very cute girl don’t know who she is.  I was in the night of the President’s ball and she waited on us.  They were doing a keen business that night. Am going to work at the Holly [Cafe] tomorrow for two weeks.  One of the girls going away.  Was down to Ponca City for four days this past week helping out with a Masonic Convention.  So have kept pretty busy.  Mueller’s changed hands the first of Jan.  So we were all out of jobs.  I had a lovely Christmas and Sam [Mar, manager of the Holly Cafe] gave me some tea.  So I didn’t miss that part of Christmas.  Leona Mae passed the first half of the year with all A’s and had the highest average in her school room.  She said to be sure and tell you hello when I wrote.  It has been ten below zero here for a week but no snow or ice.

I hope you are enjoying your visit and have you seen Hoy?  Write when you can and I’ll sure answer.

                                                                                                With Love
                                                                                                        Ina

Note: Ina wrote on Hotel Broadview stationary.  The Broadview, close to the Holly Cafe, was good for business there like the Hotel Lassen was for the Pan American.

Dear Friend King

We were pleased to hear from you and so glad you had a nice trip and arrived safe.

We have had quite a long cold spell and we are all tired of it as it keeps you in by the fire, when its below zero a person don’t care about being out (we don’t).

The weather must be nice over there would like to take a trip to China as I am sure it would be very interesting. One of our friends has been around the world and he told us he enjoyed visiting China so much.

We have been up to the Cafe several times since you left but not in the past couple of weeks for it’s been too cold and dangerous to drive the icy roads.

You are missed at the desk with that pleasant smile of yours.

We have had bad colds and there is lots of people sick, the hospitals here are full so many Flu cases and contagious diseases.

Hope we will have an early spring and the cold weather will soon be over.

Our yard is lovely when the flowers are in bloom have over a thousand tulips to bloom this year all lovely shades and after they are gone have something coming on pretty and bright till the frost in the fall.

Hope this finds you well and enjoying your trip and we will be looking for you back one of these days.

                                                                           Sincerely,
                                                                                    Mr and Mrs Ralph Spitler
