CB Edwards' letters certainly kept King up-to-date on what was happening in Wichita. I am transcribing the letters and have not edited them down. Some details will repeat. Not sure if I'll have a chance to make them into a better story of King in the 30s and 40s. - Gene

Dear friend: -
Mighty glad to
hear from you & to know you arrived safe in China. It was been pretty cold here 3° below zero
other day. We boys here in the Bank miss
you and I have wondered several times about you. I posted your letter on our blackboard so all
could read it. They were all pleased.
Things are about
the same here. Business has been fairly
good – of course it slows up this time of year.
W.T. Grant 5¢-10¢ 1.00 new store will soon open up
across south of our Bank. F. G. Orr Book Store moved to the 1st
block No. Topeka & Hart Drug Store moves to Orr’s location on No.
Lawrence. Well one thing to be thankful
for there are no new eating houses here.
Phillips Cafe Man tried to open up old Lincoln Cafeteria but did not
last long. I am still having trouble
with counterfeiters – yesterday they
raised a One to a Five with pen & ink.
This is first time they have tried to change bills on the new size with
pen.
The Street Car Co
just came in with their deposit and I let Jones of Express Co read your letter
while he had to wait for me to count Street Car Money – you know how you have
had to wait on them – they were all glad to know you are O.K.
It took just one
month for your letter to arrive so expect you will get this one in about same
time.
Let me here from
you again.
Your
friend
